The Art of Building the Ideal Bed

Now that the holiday decorations are tucked away and the festive rush has settled, many of us are looking inward. It’s the perfect time to get back to the essentials—the routines and environments that keep our lives thriving. At the top of that list is the sanctuary where we begin and end every single day: the bedroom.
While prepping an Airbnb recently, I found myself smoothing out linens and reflecting on just how much a thoughtfully constructed bed changes the energy of a room. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about engineering the perfect night’s sleep.
If you’re ready to elevate your rest, here is my step-by-step guide to building an ideal bed from the frame up.

1. The Foundation: The Platform Bed
Everything starts with a solid foundation. My personal favorite is the platform bed.
Aside from the sleek, modern silhouette, platform beds offer incredible structural support. Because they use a sturdy slat system, you can ditch the box spring entirely, which prevents that "creaky" sound over time. They also sit at a comfortable height and often provide valuable under-bed storage—perfect for keeping your space clutter-free.

2. The Heart of Sleep: The Saatva Mattress
Your mattress is an investment in your health. I have had my Saatva mattress for years, and I can honestly say I still love it as much as the day it arrived. It offers that rare "Goldilocks" balance of luxury cushioning and spinal support. When you find a mattress that lasts and remains comfortable year after year, you never look back.
3. The "Cloud" Factor: Toppers and Comforters
To achieve that high-end hotel feel, layers are key:
The Mattress Topper: A good topper adds a layer of customized pressure relief and helps protect your mattress from wear and tear.
Down Feather Comforter: For the main cover, I always choose down feathers. The natural loft of down provides a breathable warmth that synthetic materials just can’t replicate. It gives the bed that "cloud-like" volume.
The Cover: Always use a high-quality comforter cover (duvet cover). It’s the easiest way to swap out your style while keeping your heavy bedding protected and easy to launder.
4. Linens: Crisp White vs. Playful Prints
When it comes to fitted and flat sheets, my go-to is always white. There is nothing more refreshing than white linens; they feel incredibly clean and, practically speaking, they can be bleached to maintain that pristine look.
However, don't be afraid to show some personality! I love incorporating polka dots or subtle patterns to break up the solid colors and add a bit of joy to the room.

5. The Finishing Details: Color and Texture
A bed isn't finished until it’s dressed.
The Accent Blanket: Layer a blanket across the foot of the bed in the theme colors of your room. This ties the furniture into your overall decor and provides an easy layer to grab for afternoon naps.
Pillows: Start with your functional sleeping pillows, then layer on your shams. Finally, add decorative accent pillows that pull from the colors in your blanket.
Refresh Your Sanctuary
Getting back to business after the holidays is easier when you’re well-rested. By focusing on quality materials and a few thoughtful layers, you can turn your bed into a place that truly recharges you.
